Just before the tail of this Sperm Whale makes its appearance before a deep dive, the water trickles off the tail flukes. The angle that the massive body of the Sperm Whale is facing, is assurance that this whale could be out of sight for some time.
On the back end of this Sperm Whale, you can see all the indentations on the blubber and the last lump that trails along its backside towards its tail flukes. The tail flukes will rise out of the water before disappearing below the surface giving passengers aboard the whale watching tour a chance to capture some pictures.
The tail flukes are very thick and appear to be triangular shaped growing to a width of between four to four and half meters. This particular Sperm Whale is known as Saddleback and is often seen off the Kaikoura coast on the South Island of New Zealand.
A Sperm Whale is known to dive to depths of up to 10,500 feet where they feed on giant squid or fish that spend their time along the bottom of the waters. Another fascinating fact of a Sperm Whale is that once they go to the depths beyond, they do not need to come up for air for an hour or more. After their long dive, the whale will hang around the surface for about eight to ten minutes giving people the opportunity to have a good like at their beauty and size.
While visiting Kaikoura on the South Island of New Zealand, plan a day to spend on the waters and see the Sperm Whales in their natural environment. You may also cross paths with dolphins, a variety of seabirds, seals and other species of whales.
Whale Watch Kaikoura is an excellent company to go with in search of Sperm Whales but for a different perspective of these massive mammals, take an air tour and watch them dive and surface from above.
